Zephaniah records the day of the LORD—judgment on Judah and the nations—and the salvation and joy of a remnant.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Zephaniah, a descendant of Hezekiah, wrote under God’s inspiration (Zeph. 1:1).
  • Date of writing — About 640–622 BC, in the reign of Josiah of Judah.
  • Historical setting — Idolatry and the service of Baal remained in Judah, before and around Josiah’s reform.

Purpose of writing

  • He proclaimed the judgment of the day of the LORD (Zeph. 1:14–18) and warned them to turn from pride and idolatry.
  • With the appeal “Seek the LORD” (Zeph. 2:3), he gave hope to the humble and to those who do what is right.
  • After judgment God will rejoice over his people and restore them (Zeph. 3:14–20). For believers who hope in the last days it is a word of the day of the LORD and of salvation.
