Zechariah Audio Sermons

Zechariah holds visions and messianic prophecy given while the temple was being rebuilt. He ministered in the same days as Haggai.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Zechariah the prophet, grandson of Iddo, wrote under God’s inspiration (Zech. 1:1).
  • Date of writing — About 520–518 BC, from the second year of Darius (Zech. 1:1) while rebuilding was under way.
  • Historical setting — After the return, rebuilding resumed amid discouragement and pressure from neighboring peoples. God showed his rule and a future hope.

Purpose of writing

  • Eight night visions (Zech. 1–6) reveal God’s judgment, salvation, and the messianic kingdom.
  • With “he who touches you touches the apple of his eye” (Zech. 2:8), he gave messianic prophecy, including the Branch of David who is priest and king (Zech. 6:12–13).
  • For believers who hope in the last days it is a word to hold the salvation and the hope of the Lord’s coming that God will bring to pass.
