Ruth is a short historical book about Naomi, who left Bethlehem in a famine during the judges and returned, and Ruth the Moabite. It shows God’s grace, providence, and redemption, and the origin of David’s line.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — The author is not named. Samuel, or a writer of David’s day, is thought to have written it under God’s inspiration.
  • Date of writing — The events belong to the judges, about 1100 BC. It may have been written just before or just after David became king.
  • Historical setting — “In the days when the judges ruled” (Ruth 1:1), famine drove Elimelech’s family to Moab. The widows Naomi and Ruth return, and Boaz provides for them.

Purpose of writing

  • Ruth the foreigner fears God, cares for Naomi, and enters Israel’s community, showing God’s grace and welcome.
  • Boaz the redeemer (Ruth 4) is a shadow of redemption, and the root of David’s line and of the Messiah (Ruth 4:18–22).
  • It is a pattern of trusting God’s providence in loss, and a word of hope and devotion for believers today.
