Nehemiah Audio Sermons
Nehemiah records Nehemiah’s work of rebuilding Jerusalem’s wall and the people’s spiritual renewal after the return. Prayer, obedience, and a community centered on the word are its heart.
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — Nehemiah wrote around his own work. With Ezra it is held to have been handed on under God’s inspiration.
- Date of writing — About 445 BC, when Artaxerxes sent Nehemiah as governor of Judah to rebuild the wall.
- Historical setting — The temple had been rebuilt, but the wall lay in ruins, and enemies and injustice threatened the people. Nehemiah began with fasting and prayer, raised the wall, and led reform by the law.
Purpose of writing
- By prayer and bold obedience they rebuilt the wall, overcame opponents, and established the community with God’s help.
- With Ezra he read the law and led repentance and a renewed covenant (Neh. 8–10).
- He reformed temple, Sabbath, and marriage so that holiness would be kept, and calls believers to build church and life by prayer and the word.
