Nahum prophesies the fall of Nineveh, capital of Assyria. God’s wrath and judgment, and comfort for an oppressed people, stand at its center.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Nahum the Elkoshite wrote under God’s inspiration (Nah. 1:1).
  • Date of writing — About 663–612 BC, written before Nineveh fell in 612 BC.
  • Historical setting — Assyria had destroyed the northern kingdom and pressed Judah. The word is spoken against Nineveh, full of violence and cruelty.

Purpose of writing

  • God is slow to anger, yet he will surely judge evil and make a full end of his enemies (Nah. 1:2–3).
  • Nineveh’s fall shows that the power which abused God’s people will at last collapse.
  • The images of red shields, war, and slaughter (Nah. 2:3; 3:1–3) are also read as signs of last-days trouble and judgment, so that believers trust God’s justice.
