Joel Audio Sermons
Joel proclaims the day of the LORD through a locust plague, and prophesies repentance and the outpouring of the Spirit (Joel 2:28–32). In the midst of judgment he promises restoration and grace to a people who return to God.
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — Joel the prophet wrote under God’s inspiration (Joel 1:1).
- Date of writing — Scholars differ on the date. It is read as a Minor Prophet book set in southern Judah.
- Historical setting — Locusts, drought, and other disasters had laid the land waste. Against that setting he urged repentance before the day of the LORD.
Purpose of writing
- Through the locust plague he warned of coming judgment and called the people to fasting and repentance (Joel 1–2).
- “Rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God” (Joel 2:13)—he called them back to a gracious God.
- He promised the Spirit in the last days (Joel 2:28–32), judgment of the nations, and Judah’s restoration, and so gave hope.
