Job Audio Sermons

Job treats the suffering of righteous Job, God’s sovereignty, and the limits of human knowledge. It is a pattern of trusting God in suffering.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — The author is not named. It is received as written under God’s inspiration. Tradition has sometimes linked Moses or a wisdom writer of Solomon’s age.
  • Date of writing — Many place the events in the patriarchal age, around Abraham. The writing itself may have been arranged later.
  • Historical setting — Job of the east loses wealth, children, and health, argues with his friends, and God answers from the whirlwind.

Purpose of writing

  • Suffering is not always the wages of sin. God’s sovereignty and wisdom surpass human understanding.
  • Through Job’s endurance and confession, he teaches trust in God in the midst of trouble.
  • It is a word for believers to hold God’s sovereignty and comfort in suffering and unanswered questions.
