Haggai urges a people who had stopped rebuilding the temple after the return from exile: build the house of God first.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Haggai the prophet wrote under God’s inspiration (Hag. 1:1).
  • Date of writing — About 520 BC, the second year of Darius, and the sixth and ninth months of that year (Hag. 1:1).
  • Historical setting — Returned exiles had built their own houses and left the LORD’s temple unfinished.

Purpose of writing

  • With the promise “The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former” (Hag. 2:9), he put rebuilding the temple first.
  • He rebuked delay and excuse, and called them to obey so that God’s glory and blessing would return (Hag. 1:2–11).
  • For believers in the last days it is a word to put God’s work first, and to hold that small obedience leads on to great glory.
