2 Kings Audio Sermons
2 Kings records the decline and fall of both kingdoms after Elisha, the north in 722 BC and Judah in 586 BC. The fruit of disobedience, judgment, exile, and God’s sovereignty stand at its center.
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — With 1 Kings, prophets in Jerusalem wrote under God’s inspiration, looking back after the Babylonian exile.
- Date of writing — About 850–586 BC, from Elisha to Judah’s fall and the exile. It may have been finished soon after the exile.
- Historical setting — Elisha’s miracles, invasions by Aram, Assyria, and Babylon, the warnings of the prophets, the fall of Samaria in 722 BC, and the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in 586 BC.
Purpose of writing
- Judgment on idolatry and injustice does come, and the prophets’ warnings call for repentance.
- Even in ruin and exile, God does not abandon his covenant or his promise to David’s house.
- God rules history. Believers are to understand his saving work through obedience and repentance.
