2 Chronicles Audio Sermons
2 Chronicles runs from Solomon’s temple to the kings of Judah, the fall, and the hope of return in Cyrus’s decree. The temple, the kings’ faith, repentance, and judgment stand at its center.
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — Like 1 Chronicles, a writer after the return, traditionally Ezra, wrote it under God’s inspiration, telling the story from Judah’s side.
- Date of writing — From Solomon to the fall in 586 BC and Cyrus’s decree about 538 BC. It was likely finished after the return.
- Historical setting — The temple’s building and dedication, the rise and fall of Judah’s kings after the division, the reforms of Hezekiah and Josiah, the temple’s destruction, exile, and Cyrus’s decree.
Purpose of writing
- It shows a people’s identity in worship at the temple, and blessing or judgment as kings obey or disobey.
- When they repent he restores (2 Chr. 7:14), and he does not forget his covenant.
- Through Cyrus he opened the way to rebuild the temple, so that believers hold hope and restoration beyond judgment.
