1 Kings Audio Sermons
1 Kings records Solomon’s throne, the building of the temple, the kingdom’s glory and division, the reigns of north and south, and Elijah’s ministry. Kingship, temple, and prophet stand at its center.
Background of writing
- Author and inspiration — Prophets in Jerusalem, traditionally including Jeremiah, wrote under God’s inspiration. Samuel and Kings were compiled as one record of the kings.
- Date of writing — About 970–850 BC, from Solomon to Ahab and Elijah. It was likely arranged after Judah’s fall in 586 BC, during the exile.
- Historical setting — Solomon’s wisdom and temple, the division in 931 BC, Jeroboam’s calves, Baal worship under Ahab and Jezebel, and the ministries of Elijah and Elisha.
Purpose of writing
- Through Solomon’s temple God showed that he dwells with his covenant people.
- Kings who followed the word were blessed; idolatry and injustice brought judgment.
- Through Elijah he showed the prophet’s work and that the LORD alone is God (1 Kgs. 18), so that believers serve God alone and obey his word.
