1 Chronicles Audio Sermons

1 Chronicles retells the genealogy from Adam and the history of David’s house from the standpoint of temple worship, the Levites, and the Davidic covenant. David, the temple, and worship stand at its center.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Ezra, or a priestly and Levitical writer after the return, is traditionally said to have written it under God’s inspiration. 2 Chronicles continues the same history.
  • Date of writing — Likely arranged after the return, in the fifth century BC. It runs from the genealogies through David’s reign and preparation for the temple.
  • Historical setting — The returned community was recovering its identity around temple and worship. It retells history with an emphasis on David’s house and the priestly service, unlike Kings.

Purpose of writing

  • Genealogies and David’s house show the covenant and the history of the people God chose.
  • Around temple worship and the Levites and priests, it stresses the order of worship offered to God.
  • The Davidic covenant (1 Chr. 17) holds out hope in the Messiah, so that believers hold to the God of worship and covenant.
