Judges records the rise and fall of Israel in Canaan after Joshua, through about three hundred years of the judges. It shows the cycle of sin, judgment, repentance, and salvation, and the disorder of a time with no king.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Samuel, or a prophet and writer of his day, is said to have written it under God’s inspiration, drawing on the traditions of the judges.
  • Date of writing — It covers the judges from about 1375 to 1050 BC, and was likely compiled just before the monarchy, in Samuel’s time.
  • Historical setting — Marriage with the remaining peoples of Canaan and idolatry brought decay. God raised up foreign powers to judge, and judges to save, again and again.

Purpose of writing

  • Whenever the people forsook the LORD for idols, judgment came; when they repented, he saved them through a judge.
  • “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (Judg. 21:25). It lays bare the moral disorder of a kingless time.
  • It teaches the leader and the people God desires, and prepares the way for a king after God’s own heart, the house of David.
