Isaiah records the prophecies of Isaiah, who ministered in the southern kingdom of Judah. His name means “The LORD is salvation.” Rich in God’s holiness, judgment, and salvation and in prophecy of the Messiah (Immanuel), he is called “the prophet of the Messiah’s gospel.”

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Isaiah son of Amoz wrote under God’s inspiration (Isa. 1:1; 6:1–8).
  • Date of writing — About 739–630 BC, across some sixty years in the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah of Judah.
  • Historical setting — Judah was in crisis under Assyria, and the northern kingdom had already fallen. He exposed idolatry and injustice, and proclaimed God’s saving plan beyond Assyria and Babylon.

Purpose of writing

  • He proclaimed God’s holiness (Isa. 6) and judgment on the people’s sin, and called them to true repentance.
  • Through the child born of a virgin, Immanuel (Isa. 7:14; 9:6–7), and the suffering servant (Isa. 53), he showed that salvation is wholly the LORD’s grace.
  • He promised restoration for Israel and the nations, and a new heaven and a new earth (Isa. 65–66). For believers today it is a word of judgment, repentance, and hope in the Messiah.
