Genesis is the first book of the Pentateuch. From creation (Gen. 1–2), through the lines of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to the seventy who went down to Egypt (Gen. 50), it records God’s creation, covenant, and providence. It is where the Hebrew people, and the covenant God made with them, begin.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — God is the original author. Moses wrote under God’s inspiration (2 Tim. 3:16).
  • Date of writing — Written during the forty years in the wilderness after the exodus (c. 1446 BC), before Moses died on Mount Nebo (c. 1406 BC).
  • Historical setting — Written for Israel in the wilderness after the exodus, to show where their ancestors and God’s promise and providence began.

Purpose of writing

  • God reveals why he created all things and chose Israel through Adam, Noah, and Abraham.
  • It shows God’s plan as the seventy of Abraham’s descendants, the twelve tribes, go down to Egypt and the foundation of a priestly nation is laid.
  • Ultimately it serves God’s purpose to be glorified through Jesus Christ and those who belong to him (Gen. 1:26–28; Isa. 45:12), so that believers today may rightly know God’s providence and the history of salvation.
