Deuteronomy is Moses’ renewed preaching of the law and the covenant to a new generation on the plains of Moab. Its heart is renewing the covenant, obeying the word, and choosing life.

Background of writing

  • Author and inspiration — Just before his death, Moses recorded the last words he gave Israel under God’s inspiration.
  • Date of writing — Around 1406 BC, on the plains of Moab just before the entry into Canaan, and before Moses went up Mount Nebo.
  • Historical setting — Written to urge the new generation—about to cross the Jordan into the promised land after forty years in the wilderness—to remember that history and to obey the law and the covenant.

Purpose of writing

  • God calls them to remember his choosing, the exodus, and the mercy of the wilderness, and commands them to take the law to heart and obey (Deut. 6:5–7; 30:20).
  • Before “life and death, blessing and curse,” he appeals to them to choose God and his word (Deut. 30:19).
  • The covenant of long life, blessing, and the promised land is not only about earthly Canaan. It mirrors the blessing fulfilled as believers of the new covenant hope for eternal life and heaven.
